2026년 붉은 말의 해를 앞두고 할머니가 꾸셨다던 제 태몽이 떠오르더군요. 오빠가 말 두 필의 고삐를 쥐고 대문 안으로 성큼 들어왔다는 꿈이요. 저는 순둥순둥해 보이는 양띠지만, 본래는 말의 기질을 타고났나 봅니다.
그 운명 탓일까요? 여행기자로 20년, 베를린 생활자로 7년, 돌아와 기내지 편집장으로 2년. 늘 길 위에 있거나 세상을 관찰하는 자리에 서 있었습니다.
그리고 지난 1년, 잠시 숨을 골랐습니다. 겉으로는 고했지만, 실은 가장 치열하게 안으로 파고드는 시간이었습니다. 더 멀리 뛰기 위해 깊은 우물을 파며, 콘텐츠의 밀도를 높이고 우리가 살아갈 도시의 설계도를 그렸습니다.
그렇게 꽉 채운 에너지로 2026년을 엽니다. 올해 저의 나침반이 될 단어는 ‘공명(Resonance)’입니다.
물리학에서 공명은 외부의 진동이 내부의 고유 진동수와 만났을 때, 소리와 에너지가 폭발적으로 증폭되는 현상을 말합니다. 혼자 울리는 소리는 웅얼거리는 메아리에 불과하지만, 타인과 세상이 함께 떨릴 때 그것은 거대한 파동이 되지요.
그래서 이제는 텍스트라는 1차원의 세계를 넘어섭니다. 글자 속에 갇힌 소리가 아니라, 사람들이 직접 모여 부딪치고, 서로의 진동을 느끼는 입체적인 ‘경험’을 지어보려 합니다. 마침 변화의 기운과 역동성이 넘치는 병오년(丙午年)이니, 차곡차곡 모아 온 에너지를 태워 힘차게 질주해야겠죠?

“10년 전 이스터섬 취재 때였습니다. 거대한 모아이 석상보다 제 마음을 뺏은 건, 그 뒤로 거침없이 질주하던 야생마 떼였어요. 다음 날 아침, 해변 도로를 달리는데 거짓말처럼 말 한 마리가 차창 옆에서 함께 뛰더군요. 그 신비로운 동행의 순간이 선명하게 기억에 남았습니다.

Resonance: The Year of the Red Horse
From a wild horse in Easter Island to the future of Next City Labs. A manifesto for the new year.
As we stand on the brink of 2026, the ‘Year of the Red Horse’, I am reminded of a dream my grandmother once had about my birth. She saw my brother leading two horses through the front gates of our home. Although I was born in the year of the gentle Sheep, perhaps I inherited the spirit of those horses.
Maybe that destiny explains my path. For 20 years as a travel journalist, 7 years living in Berlin, and 2 years as an Editor-in-Chief in Seoul, I have always been on the road or standing at the vantage point of an observer, watching the world flow by.
For the past year, however, I took a pause. It was quiet on the surface, but underneath, it was a time of fierce introspection. Like digging a deep well to reach the purest water, I focused on increasing the density of our content and drawing new blueprints for the way we experience our cities.
With that accumulated energy, I am opening the doors to 2026. My compass for this year is a single word: ‘Resonance’.
In physics, resonance occurs when an external vibration matches an object’s natural frequency, causing energy to amplify explosively. A sound made alone is merely a fading echo, but when the world vibrates together, it becomes a massive wave.
Next City Labs (NCL) is now moving beyond the one-dimensional world of text. We are no longer just capturing sounds trapped in letters. We are building three-dimensional ‘Experiences’ where people can collide, connect, and feel each other’s vibrations. In this dynamic year of the Horse, we are ready to burn the energy we have gathered and gallop forward.
